Full Description

Although this is a settlement explicitly documented in Domesday Book, Yawthorpe was always smaller than average. A medieval chapel, subject to Corringham, existed in 1277. The hamlet was severely reduced in the late 14th century to as few as 20 persons in 1377, yet was not deserted. It has survived as a nucleus through all but one of the post medieval farms and dwellings remaining on the old site. Early RAF vertical aerial photographs show the earthworks of a larger settlement outlined by ridge-and-furrow furlongs, all now levelled. The ridge and furrow recorded by the National Mapping Programme around Yawthorpe is included in this record.{2}{3}{4}
