Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF PILHAM FROM DOMESDAY BOOK ON HAS ALWAYS A SMALL DOCUMENTED POPULATION BUT SUFFERED NO SEVERE OR PERMANENT DECLINE. IN THE ABSENCE OF SURVIVING EARTHWORKS OR EARLY MAPS ITS EARLY MORPHOLOGY IS UNCERTAIN, BUT LIKE GILBY TO ITS SOUTH WAS PROBABLY BASED ON A SINGLE NORTH-SOUTH STREET THAT WAS BYPASSED TO THE WEST BY A NEW THROUGH ROAD AT ENCLOSURE; LATER DEVELOPMENTS HAVE ACCOMMODATED THE SETTLEMENT TO THIS WITH EAST-WEST ACCESS ROADS. {1}, HTM 18M Surviving earthwork ridge and furrow is now restricted to the area northeast of the village, north of Green Lane. {3}
