Full Description

The settlement of Walkerith. Though documented from the 13th century, it is separately identified in sources indicating population only in the early 14th century with 6 taxpayers, and in census returns from 1801 onwards with 13 and rising households. The place-name indicated its functional dependence on the Trent as a landing-place or wharf and this is reflected in its plan. Latterly (and certainly since 1805) it is a fairly regular two-row layout, but it may have earlier been a completely irregular single row fronting the Trent, whose Back Lane later became the present Main Street. The parish lies entirely on alluvium at 5m OD or less. The eastern third of the parish with its angular boundary marks its allotted share of the enclosed and warped commons to the east. {1}
