Full Description
A probable Romano-British settlement site, with indications of metal-working and iron smelting, on the south slope of Hardwick Hill and just within the parish of Laughton. Fragments of bronze and iron slag have been found in this area, along with burnt boulder stones, suggesting the presence of impromptu furnaces. Other finds from this area have included an ingot of crude bronze, four blue glass beads, a piece of a bronze brooch, a broken 'brass' ring, a perforated whetstone, pottery fragments dated from the 1st to the 4th centuries (but mostly of the 3rd and 4th centuries), bronze coins of Gallienus (253-268 AD), Claudius II (268-270 AD), and an imitation of a coin of Tetricus II (268- 273 AD), and much iron slag and burnt quartz stones. Eminson's description of some of the pottery fragments suggest that they were in use as crucibles for copper working, whilst the description of the burnt stones suggest ore roasting hearths. He also describes the iron slags in detail, and notes many scales and scraps of oxidised iron - possibly hammerscale? The site was inspected in 1964, although was largely covered in dense forest, and systemmatic field walking was difficult. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
