Full Description

The ruins of the earlier hall at Northorpe stand in eminently picturesque decay in Northorpe Park. They are mostly 16th century and undistinguished. {1} The picturesque ruins of Northorpe Old Hall stand on the edge of the grounds of the new hall. It has been neglected and abandoned for many years, but it seems that what remains was part of a much larger Elizabethan house. The hall was owned by the Farmery family in the earlier 16th century and passed to the Monson and Yarborough families through marriage. A probate inventory of Anthony Monson taken in 1682 mentions a hall, parlour, parlour chamber, hall chamber, closet, green chamber, nursery, kitchen and larder, dairy, brewhouse, cellar, 'out rooms', servants' garret and a garden house. The Yarboroughs sold the Old Hall to the Daltons who subsequently leased it out. From 1741 until 1856 the tenants were the Peacock family. In 1831 the Northorpe estate was sold to Thomas Fox, and in 1875 the new hall was built by his successor, in a Norman revival style, designed by Goldsmith (see PRN 55882). The old hall was used as farm cottages and finally abandoned in the 1940s but was never demolished and parts of it remain. The two end gables and the chimneys still stand and in the centre can be seen remains of the hall of the old timber framed house. {2} Northorpe Old Hall (formerly listed as The Old Hall) was a small country house, which is now a ruin. It was built in the 16th century and underwent alterations and additions in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The building was timber framed with coursed rubble limestone and red brick underbuilding and additions.
