Full Description

Part of an oak dug-out boat was found in 1903, at a depth of 18ft in the bank of the Trent. The fragment measured 4ft in length and c.2ft in beam. Peck had recorded the ealier finding of a dug-out canoe nearby in 1810 (see MLI50041). Dudley suggests that the 1903 fragment had actually belonged to the boat mentioned by Peck, and had probably been discarded by the wheelwright as being unsuitable for his purpose. Colquhoun reported in 1964 that the area of the 1903 find was a modern inlet with brick and timber revetments. It could not be determined whether the differing circumstances refered to the same boat, or to two boats. {1}
