Full Description

The settlement of Kingthorpe is separately documented in Domesday Book and as a member of Stainfield in 1316 but not thereafter. No earthworks have been identified and no finds reported: the settlement may never have been much larger than at present, that is a hamlet rather than a village proper - the settlement was at least in part influenced by its use as a monastic grange of Stainfield Priory. No township boundary has been identified separating Kingthorpe from Apley, but in practice the woodland block comprising Thistle Storr, College and Glad Woods almost spans the parish and separates off a small eastern unit, formerly much wooded, containing Kingthorpe, and extending to less than a quarter of the parish. Woodland in Kingthorpe is documented from the 12th century onwards. {1}
