Full Description

The remains of a timber-framed cottage constitutes the western part of the present Orchard Cottage. This part of the building is of 3 bays, with internal dimensions of 7.68m by 3.82m. Surviving timbers include the cross ties in the gable ends (with blocked mortice holes for the braces), all the braces, verticals and the wall plate in the north face but with only the wall plate surviving in the south face. The earliest visible bricks were those of the central chimney stack and fire place, extending from the north wall opposite the doorway, and dividing the building into two rooms. The brick bond of the chimney stack was not determined as it was concealed by soot deposits. The original loft access was not found, but was presumed to have been possibly in the centre of the west bay, and by ladder. The probable Victorian outshot to the rear and the kitchen extension at the east end were believed to be contemporary with the brick cladding of the main building, the insertion of a staircase at the east end, the insertion of the first floor, modifications to the possibly hipped roof and the insertion of larger window frames. {1}{2}
