Full Description
IN THE FIELD CALLED 'CONEY GREEN' OR 'KALE GREEN', EAST OF THE ABBEY, REMAINS OF A ROAD COMPOSED OF STONES, SHELLS AND FOSSILS, 18 FEET WIDE AND 18 INCHES THICK, WAS SEEN AT A DEPTH OF 11 INCHES. A CURIOUS LEADEN VESSEL, 12 INCHES ACROSS AND 6 INCHES DEEP, WITH THE REMAINS OF HANDLES, FULL OF BLACK SOIL AND SAND, WAS FOUND 5 FEET 6INCHES DOWN. NEARBY WERE HUMAN REMAINS. IN 1964 HARPER REPORTED THAT ONE OF THE SOURCES OF THIS INFORMATION WAS DEAD AND THAT NO INFORMATION REGARDING THE FINDS COULD BE OBTAINED. ENQUIRIES AMONG IN BARDNEY INDICATED THAT THE 'ROAD REMAINS' PROBABLY UNDERLAY THE PRESENT KING'S HILL ROAD, AN OLD TRACK BETWEEN ABBEY FARM AND THE BARROW, CENTRED AT TF11857053. {1}
THE EXTREME DEPTH AT WHICH THE 'ROAD' WAS FOUND AND ITS RATHER ODD NATURE, MAY INDICATE THAT WHAT WAS FOUND WAS POSSIBLY A PLEISTOCENE RIVER PALAEOCHANNEL.
