51150 A VIKING-PERIOD AXE OF THE EARLY C11 FOUND IN THE RIVER WITHAM NEAR BARDNEY DURING DREDGING IN 1787. THE AXE HAS A VERY THIN STEEL BLADE THICKENED JUST BEHIND THE LONG CUTTING EDGE, AND AN OVAL EYE WITH PROJECTIONS ABOVE AND BELOW THE SOCKET PROBABLY DESIGNED AS MUCH FOR ORNAMENT AS FOR USE IN ATTACHMENT. NOW IN CITY AND COUNTY MUSEUM. {1}{2} OTHER FINDS CLASSIFIED AS SAXON OR DANISH DREDGED UP FROM THE RIVER WITHAM NEAR BARDNEY (TF1169 AREA) AND BARDNEY ABBEY (TF1170 AREA) IN 1787-8 INCLUDE TWO IRON SPEARHEADS; TWO DAGGERS; A CHOPPING KNIFE OR DAGGER; A FELLING AXE; A PROBABLE BATTLE AXE (SEE ABOVE); A PROBABLE PARADE AXE; AND A CARPENTER'S TOOL. PART OF THE DEAN AND CHAPTER'S COLLECTION, TRANSFERED TO CITY AND COUNTY MUSEUM IN 1906. {3} SOME OF THESE OBJECTS ARE PROBABLY MEDIEVAL IN DATE.
