Summary

FOUNDATIONS OF A POSSIBLE BARN EXCAVATED IN 1910

Type and Period (3)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

A LONG RANGE OF BUILDINGS, PROBABLY A BARN, WITH LATER SUBDIVISIONS. {1} INSIDE THE GREAT GATEHOUSE WAS THE OUTER COURT OF THE ABBEY. IT WAS BOUNDED ON THE NORTH BY A RANGE OF BUILDINGS, 255.5' IN LENGTH BY 23.5' IN WIDTH OVERALL, WITH WALLS 2.5' THICK. THIS RANGE COULD NOT BE PROPERLY CLEARED OWING TO MORE PRESSING WORK, BUT IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN DIVIDED AT SOME TIME BY CROSS WALLS. IT WAS PROBABLY THE GREAT BARN OF THE ABBEY. AT THE WEST END OF THIS BARN, BUT STANDING OUT 10' TO THE SOUTH, WERE INDICATIONS OF ANOTHER BUILDING ABOUT 20' SQUARE. {2} RUNNING ALMOST PARALLEL TO THE CHURCH, SOME DISTANCE TO THE NORTH, THE CORNERS AND CROSS WALLS OF 280' OF STABLING 30' WIDE WERE ALL DUG OUT IN 1910. {3}, HTM 11M
