Full Description

FOUR STONE COTTAGES WITH THATCHED ROOFS, STANDING IMMEDIATELY OUTSIDE THE WESTERN BOUNDARY OF THE CHURCHYARD AND APPARENTLY, TO JUDGE FROM THE ENCLOSURE MAP OF 1792, BUILT IN AN L-SHAPE, WITH 2 FACING THE ROAD AND 2 FACING WEST, WERE ERECTED AT AN UNKNOWN DATE FOR THE USE OF ELDERLY POOR PEOPLE. THESE WERE MAINTAINED BY THE PARISH AND SURVIVING DOCUMENTARY RECORDS FROM 1804-1829 DETAIL THE EXPENSES OF THE OVERSEERS AND NAMES OF THE OCCUPANTS. THE POOR HOUSES WERE DEMOLISHED WHEN THE CHURCHYARD WAS EXTENDED WESTWARDS IN 1896. {1}~ FOR THE 1792 ENCLOSURE MAP SEE EVERSON, TAYLOR AND DUNN, 1991. {2}~
