Full Description
EXCAVATIONS ON THE SITE REVEALED A RUBBLE SURFACE EXTENDING SE TO NW. A LARGE AMOUNT OF ANIMAL BONE OF VARIOUS DOMESTIC SPECIES, TOGETHER WITH HAND- MADE, SHELL-FILLED MIDDLE SAXON POTTERY AND OTHER FINDS FORMED AN UNDISTURBED LAYER ON TOP OF THIS SURFACE. A GULLY RUNNING OBLIQUELY SW DOWN THE HILL THROUGH THE RUBBLE TOWARDS THE SPRING MAY HAVE BEEN FOR DRAINAGE. WORKED FLINTS WERE FOUND NEARBY. OTHER FINDS FROM THE EXCAVATIONS INCLUDE A COMPLETE HOG-BACKED IRON KNIFE, THE TANG AND PART OF THE BLADE OF ANOTHER, AND OTHER IRON OBJECTS, PARTS OF TWO DOUBLE-SIDED BONE COMBS AND FRAGMENTS OF BURNT CLAY, WITH ONE PIECE OF DAUB. 1 SPINDLE WHORL AND IRON SLAG WERE ALSO FOUND. OTHER MIDDLE SAXON FINDS WERE LOOMWEIGHTS, A BONE THREAD PICKER AND 1 FLAT-TOP RIM. MARKINGS IN THE AREA WERE ALSO NOTED IN 1969. THERE IS ALSO REFERENCE TO THE DISCOVERY OF MIDDLE SAXON PENANNULAR BROOCHES (51604).{6}
