Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF HELPESTHORPE IS UNDOCUMENTED EXCEPT IN THE C14 AND C15 AS 'THE HAMLET OF HELPESTHORPE', WHOSE TITHES FORMED AN ADJUNCT TO THE MANOR OF WILLOUGHTON HELD BY THE ALIEN ABBEY OF ST NICHOLAS AT ANGERS (PRN 54219). EVERSON SUGGESTS THAT THE HAMLET IS TO BE IDENTIFIED WITH A RECTANGULAR BLOCK OF PROPERTIES ON THE SOUTHEAST OF WILLOUGHTON VILLAGE, FLANKING A LANE RUNNING DUE SOUTH FROM THE MOAT AT MONKS GARTH. THE REGULAR FORMS OF THE BLOCK AND ITS SUBDIVISIONS, APPARENT ON THE ENCLOSURE AWARD MAP OF 1769, SUGGEST A PLANNED ADDITION, PERHAPS THE CREATION OF THE MANOR OF ST NICHOLAS. {1}
