Full Description
THE PLACE-NAME 'ALFLETBY', DOCUMENTED FROM THE EARLY C13 TO THE C16, HAS BEEN SUPPOSED TO INDICATE AN EXTINCT HAMLET IN WILLINGHAM PARISH. NO FIELD EVIDENCE HAS BEEN ENCOUNTERED TO SUPPORT THIS OR TO LOCATE THIS SETTLEMENT; BECAUSE OF THE SIZE AND MORPHOLOGY OF WILLINGHAM ITSELF, A POSSIBILITY IS THAT IT WAS ADJACENT TO WILLINGHAM AND WAS ABSORBED INTO THE LARGER SETTLEMENT PLAN, LOSING ITS DISTINCTIVE NAME. CERTAINLY BY 1780 THERE WAS NO SETTLEMENT OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE. EVERSON SUGGESTS THAT THE EXTRAVAGANTLY DOG- LEGGED ROAD (FROM SK87718458 TO SK87578430) WHICH SEEMS TO BE SKIRTING THE CLOSES ASSOCIATED WITH 'COT GARTH LANE' MAY INDICATE THAT THEY REPRESENT A DISTINCT MORPHOLOGICAL ELEMENT, PERHAPS THE LOST SETTLEMENT OF ALFLETBY. {1}
