Full Description

St Helen's Church has a decorated tower with an early Norman base [1066 to 1100]. The nave is decorated and the chancel arch is Transitional, but there was much rebuilding in 1880. {1}{2} St Helen's Church has an unbuttressed west tower, a nave with north aisle, and a chancel. It was mostly rebuilt in 1880 in the Decorated style by Broderick and Smith. There is a small Norman west window in the tower. The blocked simple north doorway is also Norman. The south doorway has an early 13th century arch and hoodmould. The ample chancel arch looks late 17th century in date. The font is Transitional and drum shaped, with pointed little arches on coupled shafts. There are some Perpendicular bench ends which are square headed, with tracery. The stained glass in the east window is by Burlison and Grylls, in the south chancel by Clayton and Bell. The monuments have been removed to the tower and incorrectly reassembled. A good tablet to Elizabeth Dymoke (died 1741) has been badly reset with the side scrolls upside down and the flaming urns reversed. A good urn to Thomas Wells (died 1781) has also been reset with the side mouldings upside down. {3} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
