Full Description

During the dry summer of 1917, J. Dixon noted parch marks in a piece of ground in front of the door to Holton Hall, to the south of the house. Using a probe, he traced the base of a stone wall, mostly less than 1ft below the surface. The wall ran for a length of more than 20 yards, and measured roughly 2ft 6" wide. Dixon also noted two large flat stones to what he thought was the south of the wall and close by a large piece of a millstone. A possible paved path ran at right angles to the wall foundations, and there was a roughly square area of fairly flat stones, possibly being a paved area. Pieces of pottery of various dates were found, along with a stone spread possibly used to level the ground. Dixon believed that he had found a medieval or post-medieval windmill site, but his sketch of the stone foundations make this unlikely. It would appear to represent a possibly rectangular stone building, possibly a precursor to the Hall. {1}
