Full Description

PRN 50863 An extensive area of rather irregular overlapping cropmark enclosures in a rectangular configuration, with a long sinuous ditch on the east - possibly a trackway or a boundary ditch. The cropmarks continue on the western side of Cross Lane, where a square-shaped ditched enclosure, with two possible internal hut-circles, centred at TF01149244, appears to be connected to the main complex by a series of ditched enclosures - possibly field boundaries. Possibly a small settlement of Romano-British date. Fieldwalking by Dilwyn Jones over the main area of cropmarks on the east side of Cross Lane produced a heavy concentration of Romano-British pottery and a single Iron Age sherd (see PRN 50864 and 50865). Jones suggests that the complex represents a dependent village possibly connected to a villa site east of Cross Lane Bridge in Glentham, and considers the western enclosure with the round houses and the Iron Age sherd to indicate an earlier, pre-Roman phase of occupation. {1}
