Full Description

The medieval settlement of Atterby is first separately documented in the late 12th century. Early 14th century returns shows it to have been a small settlement compared to its neighbours. It was severely reduced by the Black Death, showing no signs of recovery in the 15th century and was subsequently commonly returned in taxation documents with Snitterby, the settlement to its north. The last surviving earthworks recorded on early RAF vertical aerial photographs were levelled in 1977. Fieldwalking in 1977 by Paul Everson and Naomi Field produced medieval and later pottery including Stamford, Lincoln, Humber and Shelly wares indicating abandonment of parts of the settlement in the later 14th century and 15th century. {1}
