Full Description
A late Georgian complex of wharf, slipway, warehouse, road bridge and inn at Brandy Wharf on the Ancholme Navigation.
The cast iron road bridge on stone abutments was built across the Ancholme Navigation in 1831. The adjacent warehouse and the anchor inn public house are probably of the same vintage. The bridge is now the limiting point for larger vessels using the Ancholme. {1}
Brandy Wharf Bridge is a cast iron road bridge built in 1831 with a deck supported by five parallel cast iron girders springing from ashlar abutments. The road splay for the abutments is in red brick with stone copings. There are modern steel railings to the deck and plain iron railings to the splays. The girders were cast by 'Butterly Co'. Road traffic is controlled by traffic lights. It is one of the series of Ancholme bridges surveyed by the SLHA in 1993 to 1994. Their interest lies not only in their intrinsic value, but also as part of a collection of river bridges of varying designs. {3}{4}{5}
The brown brick former warehouse on the western side of Brandy Wharf was built in c.1825, and is a listed building. {6}
