Full Description
THE SETTLEMENT OF WADDINGHAM ST MARY ALIAS STAINTON IS SAID TO HAVE LAIN WEST OF WADDINGHAM BECK. THE SETTLEMENTS ARE DISTINGUISHED IN DOCUMENTARY SOURCES UNTIL THE C14, BUT RARELY THEREAFTER. BY C17 THE TWO SETTLEMENTS HAD BECOME AS A SINGLE SETTLEMENT. THE C19 FIELDNAME 'HALL CLOSE' MAY INDICATE THE LOCATION OF A FORMER MANOR SITE. {1}, HTM 19M
During a waching brief on land west of Silver Street evidence of activity dating from the eighth century was revealed. Residual sherds of eighth to tenth century pottery were recovered. Ditches and pits, including rubbish pits, dating from the thirteenth to the fourteenth century to the post medieval period were recorded. {5}{6}
