Full Description

PRN 50794 A triangular element has been identified at SK 8376 7897; in part in the modern road pattern but principally in estate maps, and interpreted as the remains of a medieval open market place. {1}{2} However, excavations have revealed that there are former structures on this site dating to the medieval period, so it is now doubtful that this site really was a market place. {3}{4} In 1219 Henry III granted Philip de Albiniaco the right to hold a market in Torksey on a Monday. Later the same year this was amended to a Saturday. The market was to be held at the manor. A fair was also granted at the same time, to be held on St Giles' day (1st September) although this was later changed to St Swithin's day (2nd July). Another market and a fair to be held on Holy Trinity were granted by Edward I to John de Balliol and Isabel his wife. Various further markets and another fair were added in the 14th century, to be held by the Burgesses or by local nobles. The locations of these markets are not known and there may have been more than one market place. {5}
