Full Description

A large complex of maltings constructed between the early 18th century and 1900. The buildings fill a narrow, restricted site with frontage both to the River Trent and to the road, and with access to both. {1} The earliest buildings on the site date from the early 18th century. One runs between the river and the road and was probably built as a warehouse while the other is two storey and of domestic origin. The complex also incorporates a three storey house of mid-18th century date. There was major expansion at the site from c.1840 when it was taken over by Sandars and Sons and malting began. A series of four storey maltings were then built, incorporating the previous buildings. These were again extended in the late 19th century. The maltings were in use up to 1900. {2} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3}{4} An existing building survey and photographic record was undertaken at Sandar's Maltings, in September 2005. Sandars Yard is a large brick built complex lying between Bridge Street and the River Trent. Previously there was an amalgamation of single units forming this large building each with separate ownership. The only section that still remains is the Southern Section facing the Bridge and the Western Section adjoining the Trent. The two earliest buildings on the site date back to the late 17th Century or the early 18th Century. This building was used as maltings with the kiln on the southern side facing the bridge. In 1840 the original maltings was widened and additional malting capacity added in both east and west buildings. The building was also extended northwards towards 92 Bridge Street (Millar Court) forming a courtyard accessible from Bridge Street by pedestrians only. {5} A watching brief was carried out during conversion of the building to apartments. Material relating to the construction of the building was observed. {6}{7}
