Full Description

Quantities of Romano-British pottery have been ploughed up here; examples seen by T. Baker were mainly late third to fourth century. {1} Decorated samian sherds and a mortarium with a rim stamp were seen in 1954. {3} For a detailed description see the archaeological notes published in 1955. {5} A Gainsborough resident reported quantities of Romano-British pottery from a field adjoining Whoofer Lane. Samples of the pottery seen on 4th November, 1950 were all dated to the late third to fourth century AD. Pottery is extensively distributed over the field. {6} In 1964 the ordnance survey field inspector reported that the area was under the plough and that fieldwalking revealed no finds. {4}
