Full Description

A probable Roman site was discovered in 1960. Finds consisted of 3 flat querns, greyware and samian pottery, and a quantity of building material including brick and tile. In 1963 the site was under plough; there was an abundance of Roman tile visible on the surface but no pottery was seen. {1}{2} Third and fourth century pottery including storage jars, a cheese wring and a colander were found in 1977. {3} Cropmarks of a nucleated settlement of a rather irregular rectilinear form with its limits possibly defined by a perimeter ditch. A droveway extends to the river Ancholme on the west, and there are ?external enclosures visible on the south. Overlapping interior features suggest more than one phase of construction. {4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9} Field walking near this site in 1996-97 recovered a small quantity (16 sherds) of Roman domestic pottery, mostly greyware but also including some calcareous tempered ware. {10}
