Full Description
Tealby is a large settlement in early medieval documentation, with varied tenure and seven holdings recorded in 1086. There was a slight population decline in the 14th century, but the black death does not appear to have had a great impact. In 1563 there were 97 households. There was some decline of population in 1607 and again towards the end of the 17th century. By 1801 the population was less than in the mid-16th century. {1}{2}
Extensive earthworks of the medieval settlement of Tealby have been identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. The remains are comprised of a number of tofts, crofts, enclosures and linear boundaries, located around the modern core of the village. {3}{4}
A medieval coin of Henry II (1180-9) was found in a garden at Tealby (PRN 50611a - TF 1534 9065). The coin is of the Short Cross and Crosslets type and is inscribed: (R)EINIER WINC (WINCHESTER).
Sherds of 16th to 17th century Old Bolingbroke type pottery were also recovered from the same location. {5}
The field in the centre of the village is known as 'Howsham's Field' and is still used for summer grazing. It is an important open area in the Conservation Area. {6}
Eight sherds of redeposited pottery were recovered during the archaeological monitoring of the construction of an extension to Barn Cottage, Rasen Road (PRN 50611b - TF 1573 9083). The assemblage dated from the 14th to the 19th centuries and included fragments of Bourne, Toynton and Dutch Red wares. {7}{8}
