Full Description

The base of what is thought to be an Anglo-Saxon cross, which was raised from where it was sunk in the earth in Aisthorpe churchyard and replaced in the same position. The top face of the 1m square base, with a large socket, was visible in 1964, almost flush with the ground, at SK94638016. It was in very poor condition; chipped, flaking and overgrown. {1}{2} Fragments of at least two late Anglo-Saxon (late 10th century or 11th century) interlace slabs from a cross shaft (or shafts) have been reset into the inner east wall of the ringing chamber on the first floor of the tower, just above floor level. One, very worn, has had '1867' added to it, the date of the rebuilding of the church. {3}{4}
