Full Description

The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Fonaby was discovered in 1956. Local excavators salvaged a number of grave groups and unstratified objects before the site was investigated under the auspices of Scunthorpe Museum. A little Iron Age and early Romano-British pottery was found on the site. The Anglo-Saxon cemetery contained both inhumation and cremation burials, analysis of the material and site records has resulted in the assembly of 49 inhumation grave groups and 28 Anglo-Saxon pots and cremation vessels. There is a large number of unstratified objects. Most of the finds are 6th century; some of the pots may be earlier. The quality of the material shows the prosperous nature of the Fonaby community. The quantity of the preserved textile remains is outstanding. {4} The earliest published reference to this site refered to it as being in Hundon. It is clear from the information within the reference that it is this site that is being described. {5}
