Full Description
Burials were found in a drainage trench on the west side of the Riseholme Road during work on the Lincoln by-pass in 1984. The bones had already been disturbed, perhaps at a time when a Victorian house (demolished to make way for the by-pass) was built on the site. At least twelve graves were seen in the trench sides. It was Roman practice to bury the dead along roads outside the city boundary and these burials probably date to that time. {1}
Skeletal remains of at least 15 individuals were found. {2}
A large area of the easement of Ermine Street was meticulously cleaned after topsoil removal, during works along the Welton to Lincoln trunkmain, to see whether the cemetery extended to both sides of the road and to determine whether or not there were other archaeological features on the site. The clearing revealed no archaeological features and the point at which easement stripping ceased may have been too far east of the street frontage to encounter any remains. {3}
