Full Description

Site a a Roman building to the south-west of Sturton by Stow. It was discovered in 1928, when a portion of a mosaic floor was found during ploughing. The mosaic had a band of large red and grey chequers, bordered on each side by a double fillet of white and broad bands of grey and red. It is only known from a sketch and description, so details may be approximate. Fragments of broken tile were seen at the site, but no pottery was found. Some reports state that a portion of the mosaic was taken to the Lincoln Museum, but no trace of this has been found. The landowners were not able to provide any more information about the finds or the site. Further pieces of tile, broken stone, and a greyware rim were reported in 1964. A Mrs. Rudkin remembered finding tesserae on the surface in the area. More artefacts were uncovered in 1978, when a collection of Roman pottery, coins, and small finds were found. {1}{2}{3}{4}
