Full Description

PRN 50565 A POSSIBLE VILLA MAY BE LOCATED AT SNITTERBY ON THE DIP SLOPE, SOME 1.8KM TO THE EAST OF ERMINE STREET. THE CROPMARK EVIDENCE IS INCOMPLETE, BUT THE OVERALL EVIDENCE SUGGESTS A SITE OF SOME STATUS. APs SHOW A MAIN ENCLOSURE OF REGULAR RECTILINEAR PLAN, THE FULL EXTENT OF WHICH HAS YET TO BE REVEALED, WITH ANCILLIARY ELEMENTS ON THE EAST. THE PERIMETER APPEARS SINGLE-DITCHED WITH THE EAST SIDE PARTLY DOUBLE-DITCHED. THE EXISTENCE OF A BUILDING HAS BEEN SUSPECTED FROM THE PRESENCE OF A DENSE SCATTER OF STONES RECORDED ON AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GENERAL AREA OF THE MAIN ENCLOSURE. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY THE LANDOWNER WHO REVEALED THAT EXTENSIVE SECTIONS OF WALLING SURVIVING TO A SUBSTANTIAL HEIGHT WERE EXPOSED DURING DRAINAGE OPERATIONS IN 1982, INCLUDING A MASONRY PLATFORM c2M SQUARE. A COLLECTION OF ASSOCIATED POTTERY RECOVERED AT THAT TIME APPEARED TO BE OF LATE C3-C4 DATE. FIELDWALKING (BY D JONES?) IN NOVEMBER 1985 PRODUCED A THIN SCATTER OF GREYWARE SHERDS. MODERN HOUSING ENCROACHES ON THE SITE FROM THE EAST. {1} THE OWNER HAS STATED THAT THE REPORT IN {1} THAT THERE ARE 'EXTENSIVE SECTIONS OF WALLING SURVIVING TO A SUBSTANTIAL HEIGHT' AND THAT THERE IS 'A MASONRY PLATFORM c2m SQUARE', IS MISTAKEN; LOOSE STONES WERE FOUND BUT NO WALLS OR MASONRY PLATFORM. {5}, HTM 20M
