Full Description

Large quantities of 3rd and 4th century Roman coarse pottery (no Samian), roof and flue tiles, clinker and ash, a leaden figure, an inscribed quern stone which may read 'MINO', whetstones, coins of Constantine and a few minimi have been found. At TA06990148 in the farm yard, a mass of Roman mortar was seen in December 1929. In 1963 there was no trace of the mortar, nor was there visible evidence of a building. The site was in a field, previously ploughed but fallow in 1963. The farmer had numerous coarse pot-sherds, all found in recent years. Scunthorpe Museum retains a representative selection of the material. {1} Site of a Roman building. Finds include quantities of Romano-British (3rd to 4th century) pottery, coins etc. {2} Recent finds on Smithfield Farm include Romano-British sherds, mainly greyware but also some colour-coated and amphora fragments. In addition were found a spindle whorl, tile and flue fragments. Two bronze coins were found here; one possibly attributable to Tetricus I, and also an antoninianus of Gallienus. {3}{4}
