Full Description

The Church of St Cornelius is mainly Early English in date. The large round-headed west window of the south aisle is probably not Norman. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} A parish church dating from the late 12th century which underwent alterations in the 13th, 14th and 15th century and restoration in 1854 and 1868. It is built of coursed and squared ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features slate and lead roofs with stone coped gables. The tall, 3-stage western tower dates to the 14th century and has a roll moulded plinth, angle buttresses, single string course, moulded parapet with gargoyles to the angles. Inside the church, at the west end of the north aisle are 2 fine early 15th century brasses, both of which feature the merchant John Lynd(e)wode (d.1421). The northern brass shows John on his own, with his feet resting on a woolsack on which is his woolmark. The southern brass show John with his wife Alice (d.1419), with a panel beneath showing 7 figures under cusped arcades. Below this is the inscription recording the deceased. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {6} The dedication is unusual and might in itself be early, although an alternative context in which it might arise, and specifically within a manorial enclosure, is through later lordly enthusiasm. {7} Stained glass in this church dates to about 1300 AD. {8}
