Full Description

PRN 50547 Romano-British pottery found, and masonry seen by H. Preston in 1958 in the side of a new dyke at Atterby. Surface debris in the indicated area centred at SK97689251 forms a rectangle approximately 6m by 10m in the ploughed field, indicating the site of a building. The material obviously of the Roman period and includes tile, pottery (greyware and coarse ware) and glass. Much stone is also evident. {1}{3}{7} Irregular rectilinear cropmarks extend along the flanks of the Atterby Beck for a distance of some 400m. Details on the south side of the beck (where the building remains and domestic debris scatter suggestive of a Roman villa were recorded) were not fully revealed by cropmarks. Fieldwalking in 1985 revealed extensive occupation debris in the field centred at SK978926. No material was found in the ploughland on the north side of the beck. {2}{4}{5} The cropmarks have also been interpreted as prehistoric and medieval (see PRNs 52005, 52006).
