Full Description

The remains of Stainton le Vale village are probably one of the most extensive medieval earthwork complexes in the country. They stretch for almost 2km along a narrow chalk valley. They seem to represent the results of a complex tenurial pattern with a relatively high 10th to 11th century village population. Overall, a pattern of 4 nuclei of manorial type does emerge in these earthworks, with, in the centre, to the south and southeast of the old rectory and along the north and south sides of the east nuclei, indications of properties which perhaps represent areas of peasant holdings associated with these manorial blocks. {1}{2}{3} Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Archaeological Project Services in 2011 during excavation of foundation and services trenches for agricultural buildings at South Farm, Stainton le Vale. Three furrows which probably relate to the medieval field system were revealed. An early Saxon sherd of pottery, medieval pottery and a 14th to 15th century coin was found in the topsoil. {4}{5}
