Full Description
The settlement of Linwood has its origins in the medieval period and survives to the present day. The medieval remains in this area represent the northern focus of the village of Linwood, which was probably re-planned in the 12th century. The population statistics were not distinguished with those of the southern focus. The settlement grew in the early post-medieval period, but had a sharp decline in the 17th century, occuring between 1600 and 1668. There was a rise in population in the 1830's, linked presumably to the agricultural up-turn of the period. The settlement's street system was far more complex and can be traced in the earthworks surrounding the modern settlement. By 1842, this network had been reduced to the present road system. There was a former school built in 1862. Sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery have been found in the ploughsoil around the modern village. {1}{2}{3}{4}
Earthworks of extensive medieval settlement activity, including the remains of tofts and crofts, crew yards and former boundaries, were identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {5}{6}{7}{8}{9}
