Full Description
GREETWELL'S POPULATION HAS SUFFERED AT LEAST TWO AND PROBABLY THREE SHARP DECLINES, THE LAST OF WHICH REDUCED IT TO ITS PRESENT CURIOUS STANDING OF A DEPOPULATED SETTLEMENT SANDWICHED BETWEEN LINCOLN'S INDUSTRIAL SUBURBS AND ONE OF ITS LARGER COMMUTER VILLAGES AT CHERRY WILLINGHAM. IT HAD A MINIMUM RECORDED POPULATION OF 21 IN 1086, AND SHOWED NO DECLINE BY THE EARLY FOURTEENTH CENTURY, AND A RECOVERY IN THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY. GREETWELL HAD A POPULATION OF 8 IN 1539, 88 COMMUNICANTS IN 1603. MORE THAN HALF THE PARISH WAS ENCLOSED IN MEADOW AND PASTURE BEFORE 1650. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME OF THE VILLAGE MAY HAVE BEEN CLEARED AT THIS TIME WHEN THE FORMAL GARDENS SOUTH OF THE HALL WERE LAID OUT. THERE WAS A DECLINE FROM 8-9 FAMILIES IN THE EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY TO 3 IN 1752. THERE WERE 7 HOUSEHOLDS IN THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY, FALLING TO 4 IN 1851. THE SURVIVNG EARTHWORKS FORM TWO GROUPS; ONE LIES NEAR THE ELEVENTH CENTURY CHURCH AND GREETWELL HALL WITH ITS LATE SIXTEENTH-SEVENTEENTH CORE AND THE OTHER TO THE NORTH AROUND GREETWELL HALL FARM ALONG THE EAST-WEST THROUGH ROAD. {3}
Greetwell medieval and post medieval settlement remains, medieval cultivation remains and post medieval garden remains are the subject of a scheduling in two parts reflecting the two areas of settlement. {9}
