Full Description
THE SETTLEMENT OF AUDLEBY HAD A HIGH MINIMUM RECORDED POPULATION IN 1086 OF 33, BUT THEREAFTER, LIKE HUNDON, IS NOT SEPARATELY DOCUMENTED. THE VILL WAS GRANTED IN C12 TO THORTON ABBEY AND ITS POPULATION PROBABLY REDUCED INITIALLY BY LARGE-SCALE MONASTIC SHEEP-FARMING AND LATER, PERHAPS ONLY IN C16, FURTHER REDUCED BY THE MONASTIC DESMESNE BEING LET TO FARM. ITS DECLINE WAS ALREADY MARKED BY EARLY C14 WHEN IN SUBSIDIES IT IS COUPLED WITH HUNDON WITH A LOW TOTAL OF TAXPAYERS. ITS LISTING WITH CAISTOR IN 1524 MUST MEAN THAT THE VILLAGE AS SUCH HAD GONE. THERE ARE SCRAPPY EARTHWORKS BOTH EAST AND WEST OF THE PRESENT FARM. {1}{2}{3}
FINDS FROM THE AREA OF THE VILLAGE HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED BY DETECTORISTS AND ARE HELD IN SCUNTHORPE MUSEUM. THESE INCLUDE A MEDIEVAL LEAD WEIGHT, A TUDOR OPEN WORK FITTING AND TWO NUREMBERG JETTONS. {7}{8}
Field appears to contain free range pigs on 1999 aerial photographs. No obvious earthworks visible. {9}
