Full Description
THIS VILLAGE IS NOTABLE FOR THE MAJOR CHANGE TO ITS PRESUMED PLANNED LAYOUT WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THE EARLY C19. THE ENCLOSURE MAP OF 1779 SHOWS A VERY DIFFERENT LAYOUT TO THE PRESENT ONE. A FEW FIELD REMAINS HAVE SURVIVED THIS MAJOR CHANGE, BUT IT WAS SO PROFOUND THAT ANALYSIS OF THE EARLIER SETTLELMENT IS DIFFICULT. NEVERTHELESS FRAGMENTARY EARTHWORKS IN THE PARK W OF THE HALL, TAKEN WITH THE ENCLOSURE MAP, MAY ALLOW SOME PLANNED ELEMENTS TO BE PICKED OUT.
