Full Description

A GROUP OF ABOUT 5 FISHPONDS LYING IN THE VALLEY BOTTOM BETWEEN THE MAIN BECK AND A SPRING-FED SIDE STREAMLET. THEIR DEPICTION ON MODERN OS MAPS IS CLOSELY SIMILAR TO THAT ON THE TITHE AWARD MAP OF 1841, EXCEPT THAT THE LATTER SHOWS CONTINUOUS WATER CHANNELS WITHOUT THE BREAKS OR CAUSEWAYS THAT FRAGMENT THEM NOW. THEY WERE CALLED 'FISHPONDS' IN 1841. THEY ARE PERHAPS MORE LIKELY TO BE EARLY C19 AND CONTEMPORARY WITH THE HALL'S RECONSTRUCTION THAN CONTEMPORARY WITH ITS EARLIER C17 BUILD AS APPARENTLY SUGGESTED BY THE OS. {1}~
