Full Description

A group of 3 or possibly 4 fishponds lying on the north side of a shallow east-draining valley. The ponds are well-preserved in old pasture but details of their operation are unclear because of alterations to the adjacent fields and the straightening of the stream. A high-level east-west channel cut into the natural slope, was presumably fed by seepage. It supplied 3 rectangular ponds, each approximately 1m deep, arranged at right angles to it to the south. A parallel broad channel south of the ponds, itself embanked against the slope, may have acted as a single long pond. No direct documentary reference has been found to the fishponds but they lie within one of the three closes that together made up the medieval prebendal manor of Westhall as shown on late 18th and 19th century maps. These closes were 'West Yard', 'Chapel Yard', and 'Dove Yard' containing the fishponds. The field to the south of the stream is divided by slight banks, into regular rectangular plots. {1} The fishpond complex was scheduled on 7th July 1999. {3}
