Full Description

Site of an Anglo-Saxon barrow, located to the north-east of Caenby Hall. The barrow was surveyed and excavated in the Autumn of 1849, and measured about 340ft in diameter, and about 8ft high at that time. The excavation recorded a 'princely' inhumation burial inside the barrow, with the skeleton accompanied by a sword and shield, horse remains and trappings. Silver and bronze mounts from the burial are held by the British Museum and are dated stylistically to the early 7th century. The mounts were initially thought to have formed part of the shield, though later analysis suggests they might have formed part of a helmet instead. The barrow is under arable cultivation, and whilst it could still be traced during a site visit conducted in 1964, it had been much levelled by ploughing, standing only about 1ft high at that time. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}
