Full Description

The documented deer park at Linwood possibly lay adjacent to the moated manor site. In 1252, Elias de Rabayn was granted 10 does and 2 bucks by the King to stock his park at Linwood, and the name 'le launde' for a pasture appurtenant to the manor in 1314-5 and 1340-1 may reflect its existence. The tithe award field name 'Lawns Close' applied to the fields between the settlement closes on the south, the stream on the north and the modern north to south road on the west: 'Lawn Sykes' lay west of the road. Running north-west from the northern, rectangular moated enclosure, aerial photographs show a broad, ploughed out bank leading down to the stream. This may be part of a causeway linking the two settlements of Linwood across the valley: a close on the opposite slope has the field name 'Causeway Close' in the tithe award of 1842, and John Lyndewode's will in 1421 left 100/- 'to the repair of the causeway'. It may also, or alternatively, have formed the eastern side of the documented deer park. {1}
