Full Description

Cropmarks seen on Paul Everson aerial photographs of 1977, 1979 and 1980 show the junction of single and multiple (quadruple) linear ditches at the highest point on the Jurassic limestone ridge, north of the Lincoln Gap. A single ditch follows an erratic course south-east from near Middle Street (at SK 9350 9200), towards the ridge summit, then continuing east along the Hemswell-Willoughton parish boundary as multiple ditches, and then as a wider, single ditch (to SK 9410 9175); visible for c.1km. At the point where the north-west to south-east single ditch becomes a multiple-ditched boundary (at SK 9373 9182), it is joined at right-angles from the south by a single wider ditch, aligned north-east to south-west. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8} A cropmark complex including rectilinear and curvilinear elements. The configuration suggests the cropmarks may represent a ditched occupation site with more than one period of occupation. Some of the cropmarks appear to be associated with a multi-ditch linear feature which coincides with the Willoughton-Hemswell parish boundary. {9} Geophysical survey revealed traces of linear and curvilinear ditches which may relate to this site. {10} Because the cropmarks of the suggested occupation site are rather faint it is not possible to determine their relationship with the multiple ditch system. One of the ditches identified during the excavations appeared to be a continuation of a triple ditch feature noted during examination of the aerial photographs. Unfortunately the feature was not dated. Residual finds were recovered from the upper fill of the ditch which included prehistoric pottery. {11}{12}
