A ditch was sectioned during work on the British Gas pipeline. The ditch is a steep-sided V-shaped cut with narrow flattened base, measuring approximately 1.75m deep by 2.70-3.60m wide, cut into chalk bedrock. The fill contained secondary lenses of mid and dark brown silt sands, possibly the remains of turves from the original ditch edges. Several bone fragments, mainly from cattle but with one possible sheep bone, and one pottery fragment were recovered from the tertiary fill. The potsherd is late Iron Age in date and unabraded so its position even in the upper fill suggest that the ditch is Iron Age or earlier in date. Such a sherd is unlikely to survive in an unabraded state in ploughsoil, even for a short period. The ditch is possibly the remains of a substantial field boundary.{3}
