Full Description

The most prominent feature of the surviving earthworks which lie off the ridge, south of Glebe House Farm, is a roughly rectangular moat whose interior stands about 1m above its ditch. Indeterminate earthworks lie outside it with mole up-casts on the west producing 17th to 19th century pottery sherds. Traces of at least two rectangular buildings are visible and one was still marked on the 1775 enclosure award map as a standing structure. To the south, the earthworks are now bounded by a drain with a broad south bank whose line is continued up the slope to Elms Farm by a hollow-way, also shown as a road on the 1775 map. The field to the north of the hollow-way has been levelled and any earthworks linking this group with the area around the church have been destroyed. It is, therefore, difficult to assess the true significance of the moat but it may represent the site of the southern manor house. {1} The earthwork site lies about 100m to the west of the Church of St Hilary in Spridlington. The earthworks represent the remains a moated platform and surrounding water management systems. There were two distinct contiguous settlements at Spridlington in the early medieval period and the parishes were united in 1417. The monument is thought to be part of the south manor in the village. The earthworks to the south, east and west of the platform are channels and ponds related to the water management system for the moat. This includes a probable fishpond. There are also curvilinear features that are likely to represent animal enclosures. For a full description of this scheduled monument see the scheduling documentation. {2}
