PRN 50279
THE DESERTED VILLAGE OF KETTLEBY THORPE SURVIVED AS EARTHWORKS, WHICH APPARENTLY INCLUDED A SMALL MOATED SITE, A SET OF FISHPONDS AND A MANORIAL COMPLEX, AND VILLAGE STREETS AND PROPERTIES, UNTIL 1964 WHEN THEY WERE CONVERTED TO ARABLE. LIMITED EXCAVATION AND OBSERVATION OF THE LEVELLING, TAKEN WITH DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE, CONCLUDED THAT MUCH OF THE VILLAGE WAS DESERTED BY 1450, PERHAPS AS A RESULT OF THE TENURE OF THE TYRWHITT FAMILY. {3}
A WATCHING BRIEF ON THE SITE RECORDED MEDIEVAL BOUNDARIES, PITS AND A SUNKEN PATHWAY. {5}
Copies of five photographs, by Rex and Eleanor Russell, of the rescue excavations at Kettleby Thorpe DMV were taken from Scunthorpe Museum records. They were taken in 1964, and all of site 1, the 'Manor House'. {11}
A small annular bead of transluscent glass was found on the site of Kettleby Thorpe DMV in 1968. {11}
