Full Description
Cropmarks of a likely prehistoric enclosure have been noted in this location on aerial photographs. The enclosure is oblong in shape, measuring roughly 70m in length by 50m in width, and is aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis. The enclosure has rounded corners and an apparent entrance at the north end. {1}{2}{3}
Dilwyn Jones initially interpreted this feature as the remains of a possible long barrow. This interpretation was subsequently rejected by Jones on the basis of futher aerial photographic evidence. 'This enclosure lies on a crest summit of the main escarpment, which is not typical of long barrows. It is aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, and its long axis runs parallel to the contours. It is a rectilinear, wedge-shaped or trapeziform enclosure with a possible entrance gap at the north-west corner. It is not considered to be a long barrow type, but is a mortuary enclosure.' {4}{5}
The monument was designated as a scheduled monument in 1999. It was scheduled as the buried remains of a long mortuary enclosure of the Neolithic period, with the remains of two adjacent Bronze Age bowl barrows (see PRN 50443). {6}
