Full Description

St Mary's Church, Claxby has a west tower of Early English date to the bell-openings and a later Perpendicular top. Much of the external detail is Victorian. {1}{2}{3}{4} A parish church dating from the 13th century. It underwent alterations in the 15th and 16th centuries and was restored in 1871 by James Fowler of Louth. It is constructed of squared and coursed ironstone rubble, with ashlar dresssings, and features slate roofs with stone coped gables and cross fleury to ridges. Comprised of a western tower, nave with clerestorey, north and south aisles, south porch, chancel, and vestry. The 3 stage tower has a plain chamfered plinth, two chamfer moulded string courses and a roll moulded cornice to the battlemented parapet, which although much restored dates from the 15th century and has 8 pinnacles and 4 gargoyles. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {5}{6} Foundation stones of the original south wall of the church were revealed in March 2016, during archaeological monitoring of internal alterations. These works were conducted in order to relocate the 1871 font, and required the removal of several rows of pews and some ground reduction in the south-west corner of the church. A line of worked, shaped and faced stones were exposed by the works, showing the position of the original south wall, to the immediate south of the south-western column. A patch of partly worked stones, thought to have formed a pad for a former buttress, was also exposed to the immediate south. Overlying these foundations were deposits of sandy silt, mixed rubble and lime mortar, associated with the 1871 renovations of the church by James Fowler. {7}{8}
