Full Description

The Church of St Edmund retains a Decorated or Perpendicular tower, although was almost entirely rebuilt in 1868. In the north wall of the nave is a Norman doorway. The church is in normal use. {1}{2} The church was rebuilt around the Perpendicular tower in 1868 by Benjamin Ferrey. It was perhaps cruciform in plan already at the time when the Norman nave north doorway was made, with a twisted, beaded rope as a hoodmould. It might perhaps instead be that the north and south walls are the remains of a 12th century building enlarged in about 1300 with a tower, transepts, and south aisle. The present crossing arches date to about 1300, with the chamfers being partly continuous. The south arcade of three bays with octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches is perhaps also of about 1300 in date, or perhaps somewhat later. Ferrey's exterior is rock-faced and unattractive, but the interior of his vaulted chancel, delicately handled, is excellent. The choir stalls with traceried front and back panels by Ferrey are good. There are three hatchments in the chancel: William Tomline (died 1836); Francis Tomline (died 1816); and George Tomline (died 1889). Monuments include those of William and Elizabeth Tomline (died 1773) with a free-standing wreathed urn in a niche; above it is a small tablet with a woman by an urn and drapery cascading down from above, signed L. Tomline delineavit (The Tomlines were the family at the manor). A monument to John Parkinson (died 1840) is in white marble and Gothic in style. {3}{4}{5} The Church of St Edmund dates to the 12th century. It is of random limestone and ironstone rubble, with limestone and ironstone ashlar dressings, and slate roofs.
